President Trump is strongly considering another attack on the rights of the transgender community. This weekend, The New York Times reported that the Trump administration was strongly considering redefining gender as “male or female based on immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth” in order to deny civil rights protections for transgender individuals.
The Trump Administration has already called for a ban on transgender people serving in the military, repealed vital protections for transgender students, and has even tried to bar the use of the word “transgender” by the CDC.
This latest threat would go even further, running contrary to a growing tide of federal court cases, and an established consensus from the medical community on the need to recognize and accept the transgender community as they are, and the resulting discrimination against and adverse health outcomes for transgender, gender nonconforming and other LGBTQ individuals when that recognition and acceptance does not occur.
AIDS United opposes this and any policy that tries to erase the experiences and identities of transgender people living in the United States and encourages all organizations, government officials and concerned citizens to join us in reaching out to Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and demanding that this policy be scrapped immediately.
